Sage Cuts Staff, Starts New Account Management Strategy
By Neil Versel, contributing editor

Sage Software Healthcare has cut about 235 employees, or 14 percent of its U.S. workforce as it consolidates its internal electronic data interchange (EDI) staff in an effort to streamline customer relationship management, the Tampa, Fla.-based health IT vendor says.

The bulk of the reductions are among redundant cross-functional EDI positions, including for customer support and clearinghouse development. The company says the job cuts are part of a new account-management strategy, implemented in April, in which customers now have a single point of contact for non-technical needs. More...

Genetic Precision Grows (ASCO Annual Meeting)

Amednews.com reports the trickle of discoveries that revolutionized cancer care is turning into a flood. The increasing use of genetic profiling -- in regard to patients and their tumors -- is enabling physicians to identify more accurately who is most likely to benefit from certain treatment options, according to several studies and panel discussions at the June meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago. Executive Q&A
Lessons from GWU’s 30-Day EHR Rollout

By Cindy Atoji

It can take years to roll out a fully functional EHR system, yet The George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates (MFA) did it in 30 days and continues to reap “stunning” ROI and “dramatic efficiencies,” according to Stephen Badger, CEO of MFA, one of the largest multi-specialty physician practices in Washington D.C. Although the work on the EHR continues, particularly in the areas of data capture and specialty templates, Badger says that the lessons that his organization learned are valuable practices and can speed EHR rollouts in other ambulatory settings. Digital HealthCare & Productivity spoke with Badger about how EMRs can be implemented rapidly and efficiently, even in very large practices.

DHP: A typical EMR implementation takes between 18 and 36 months. Why did you decide to try to do this in 30 days?
BADGER:
We set an aggressive time frame, believing that speed in implementation can lead to more rapid physician adoption, as well as faster safety and quality benefits for patients, and more substantial recognition of a return on investment for our organization. MFA, like many physician practices, was getting bogged down by inefficient paper-based methods for storing patient charts, tracking lab results, prescribing medicines, billing insurers, and other labor-intensive and time-consuming record keeping methods. We wanted to adopt a more efficient electronic solution in an expedient matter. More...

MARKET TREND REPORTS

Battle Between Best-of-Breed and Sole Source Continues
Given all the consolidation among health-IT suppliers in the last few years, more than a few big guns have assembled true, end-to-end integrated clinical and management systems. You want single source? You got it. Yet the ongoing national push for data and interoperability standards means it easier than ever to knit together best-of-breed solutions in Lego-like fashion.
